Rehema Chalamila popularly known as Ray C was born in the Iringa region in Tanzania to a family of distinguished talents. Her parents later divorced and she was forced to grow up with a single parent - her mom who became the apple of her eye.

Ray C’s mom was a determined, hard working, and driven individual, she pushed her daughter to great heights at a very early stage, its no wonder Ray C grew up to become one of the most talented artists in Tanzania. As much as she was brought up in a single parenthood family, her mom made it possible for her to explore life and education outside Tanzania by studying in Kampala Uganda. She later graduated from Kabojja Secondary School and was immediately welcomed to the work force where she had to learn to fend for herself.

Her passion for music started at a very early stage in her life so it made sense to pursue her musical career soon after her high school since her mom made sure she completed school first. She started off her media career by working on Tanzanians leading radio station and then later moved on to work for Television since her beauty spoke more than her words. While in the media market she trained and managed to become the first female DJ in Tanzania which was a feat never attempted before in the region.

In 2001 she joined Tanzania’s number one FM radio station – Clouds FM and became one of the top DJ’s and presenters for the HipHop and R&B show popularly known as Dr. Beat. It is at this point that she started realizing her dreams and potential, he work ethic coupled with the right contacts in the industry enabled her to start vocal training, belly dancing and talent shows. By 2003 she released her debut album titled “Mapenzi Yangu (My Love)” under the GMC Record label which was well received and heavily rotated on local television and radio.

In 2004 Ray C consolidated her position on the East African music scene when she grabbed the “Best Female Artists of the year in Uganda and Tanzania” award at the 4th Kisima Music Awards in Nairobi, Kenya on June 19th 2004. While being a top recording artist in Tanzania is difficult because the East African market is largely an audio-tape market which is flooded with bootleggers, the success of an artists of this caliber was largely measured by the adverse popularity in her music and the advance record sales she received. She became one of the first few artists to receive large lump sums of cash for her albums before they hit the streets.

Today Ray C boasts a list of East African awards from best vocalist, best album, to best performing female artist. She has had three successful albums which have allowed her to explore her talents internationally touring Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, India, United Kingdom, United States, Holland, Germany, Greece, Sweden and China.

It may appear nothing can stop this Tanzanian female deva – nothing.
